Malta uses software algorithms to detect fixed matches

25 August 2017

According to the Fix The Fixing, an independent project that fights against match-fixing, every third sportsman is aware of unfair sports matches. But in the XXI century, the main instrument for combating such matches will be the technology rather than social engineering: organizations already implement algorithms to reveal suspicious games.

There are plans to apply the technology of revealing fixed matches through algorithms in Malta. Representative of the supervisory board of the Malta Football Association (MFA) Franz Tabone has recently announced that the Association has already studied the technology and plans to add it to the range of anti-match-fixing measures.

Franz Tabone highlighted that basing on the algorithm participants of suspicious sports matches could be officially charged. Precedents of using such systems have been already created in Cyprus and Lithuania and several players have been disqualified in accordance with the system’s findings.

The MFA hopes that the use of algorithms will improve the organization’s efficiency and reduce the number of fixed matches.
